Appearance and growth habit
Schefflera arboricola green, commonly known as the dwarf umbrella tree, is a lush, evergreen houseplant with glossy, deep green leaf clusters that radiate like little umbrellas. It grows as an upright, branching shrub that naturally forms a full, structured shape over time. Indoors, it can become quite tall if left unpruned, making it a great choice for filling empty corners without looking messy. It’s dependable, classic, and always looks “put together,” even on lazy plant-owner days.
Care requirements
This Schefflera prefers bright indirect light but can adapt to medium light conditions, though growth may slow slightly. Water when the top layer of soil dries out, ensuring good drainage to avoid root issues. It thrives in typical indoor temperatures and is comfortable with average household humidity. Rotating the plant occasionally helps it grow evenly instead of leaning toward its favourite light source.
Troubleshooting
If leaves start dropping, the plant is usually reacting to sudden changes in light, watering, or temperature. Yellowing leaves often point to overwatering, while leggy growth means it needs more light or a light prune to encourage bushiness. If growth slows significantly, it may simply need brighter conditions. It’s generally tough, but it dislikes surprises more than it lets on.
Pet and reptile safety
Schefflera arboricola green is toxic to cats, dogs, and reptiles if ingested. It contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause mouth irritation, drooling, vomiting, and digestive discomfort. It is not considered safe for tortoises, bearded dragons, geckos, or other pets that may chew foliage. Best kept out of reach so it stays a reliable greenery feature, not a health concern.
