Appearance and growth habit

Maranta Leuconeura TriColour is a low, spreading tropical plant with soft oval leaves that look like they’ve been hand painted. Each leaf carries a mix of deep green, lighter green, creamy yellow and pink tones, with feathered patterning that makes every leaf slightly different. It grows in a compact, trailing habit rather than tall and upright, slowly forming a lush clump that gently spreads over time. It is also known for its “prayer plant” behaviour, with leaves that lift slightly at night like it is quietly judging your lighting choices.

Care requirements

This plant prefers bright, indirect light to keep its colour strong, but it will tolerate lower light if you are not trying to win a foliage competition. Keep the soil lightly moist but never soggy, as it dislikes sitting in water more than it dislikes your forgotten watering schedule. It enjoys humidity, so bathrooms or grouped plant setups make it very happy. Normal indoor temperatures suit it well, and a light balanced feed during the growing season keeps it looking full and healthy.

Troubleshooting

If the leaves start curling or crisping at the edges, it is usually asking for more humidity or more consistent watering. Faded colours often mean the light is too low, while scorched patches suggest it is getting too much direct sun. Yellowing leaves can be a sign of overwatering, so check the soil before you panic and start overcorrecting. It is generally forgiving, but it will absolutely let you know when it is not impressed.

Pet and reptile safety

Maranta Leuconeura TriColour is considered non toxic to cats and dogs, making it a safer choice for homes with curious pets who think every plant is a salad. It is also generally regarded as reptile safe for terrarium use, although it is always best to prevent heavy chewing or damage. In short, it is a visually dramatic plant without the dramatic consequences, which is always a win.
