Appearance and growth habit
Fittonia albivenis 'Pink Forest Flame' is a vibrant trailing houseplant with rich green leaves heavily flushed with bright pink, creating a bold splash of colour that's hard to miss. Unlike varieties with pink veins alone, this cultivar often has pink extending across much of the leaf surface, giving it a fuller, more dramatic appearance. Its compact, spreading growth makes it ideal for terrariums, hanging planters, desktops, and mixed indoor displays.
Care requirements
'Pink Forest Flame' thrives in bright, indirect light, where its vivid colours are at their best, although it will also tolerate lower light conditions. Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged, and provide plenty of humidity to encourage healthy, lush growth. Warm temperatures and a humid environment will keep this colourful little plant looking its finest.
Troubleshooting
Drooping leaves usually mean it's thirsty, but don't panic—Fittonias are famous for making a dramatic point before bouncing back after a good watering. Yellow leaves often indicate overwatering or poor drainage, while brown, crispy edges suggest the humidity is too low. Spider mites and mealybugs can occasionally appear in dry conditions, so maintaining good humidity helps prevent unwanted visitors.
Pet and reptile safety
Fittonia albivenis 'Pink Forest Flame' is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a great choice for pet-friendly homes. It is also widely regarded as suitable for bioactive reptile enclosures, including those for geckos, snakes, chameleons, and many other reptiles, where it provides colourful ground cover and natural shelter. Although safe as a decorative enclosure plant, it should not be considered a food source, and reptiles should always be provided with a species-appropriate diet.
