Appearance and growth habit
Schefflera arboricola ‘Kalahari’ is a compact, bushy tropical plant with glossy, finger-like leaflets arranged in an attractive umbrella shape. It is an excellent choice for adding lush greenery to indoor spaces and can be pruned to maintain a neat, compact shape or allowed to grow into a fuller statement plant. It is also a popular choice for planted displays and terrariums when kept at a suitable size.
Care requirements
Give Schefflera ‘Kalahari’ bright, indirect light and keep it warm, ideally around 18–28°C. Allow the top few centimetres of the growing medium to dry slightly between waterings and use a well-draining potting mix. It enjoys moderate humidity but is generally adaptable to normal indoor conditions. Feed during active growth to encourage healthy, bushy growth.
Troubleshooting
Yellowing leaves are usually a sign of overwatering, while leaf drop can occur if the plant is kept too dry, exposed to cold temperatures or moved suddenly. Brown leaf edges can indicate dry conditions or too much direct sunlight. If growth becomes sparse or leggy, move it to a brighter position and prune lightly to encourage branching.
Pet and reptile safety
Schefflera arboricola is not considered pet safe. It contains calcium oxalate crystals and other compounds that can cause irritation if chewed or eaten. It is not recommended for reptiles that may nibble on the foliage, so choose a confirmed reptile-safe plant for enclosures where animals have direct access to the plants.
