Appearance and growth habit
Taxiphyllum sp. 'Flame Moss' is a unique moss known for its upright, twisting shoots that resemble tiny green flames. Unlike mosses that spread flat, Flame Moss grows vertically, adding height, texture, and movement to terrariums, paludariums, aquariums, and vivariums. It's an easy way to make your scape look a little more dramatic without adding extra maintenance.
Care requirements
Flame Moss thrives in bright, indirect light with consistently high humidity and moist conditions. It grows best when attached to wood, rocks, or other hardscape using thread or moss glue until established. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can dry the moss out quickly, and use rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water where possible for the healthiest growth.
Troubleshooting
If the moss starts turning brown or loses its upright shape, it is usually a sign of low humidity, drying out, or excessive direct sunlight. Slow growth is normal, but stable moisture and good airflow will keep it looking lush. Regular misting and clean, low-mineral water help maintain its vibrant appearance.
Pet and reptile safety
Taxiphyllum sp. 'Flame Moss' is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a safe choice for pet-friendly homes. It is also ideal for humid reptile and amphibian enclosures, where it adds natural cover, retains moisture, and creates a lush habitat. Although considered safe, it should be treated as decorative habitat material rather than a food source.
