Appearance and growth habit
Hypopterygium rotulatum, commonly known as Umbrella Moss, is a striking moss with delicate, fern-like fronds arranged in tiny umbrella-shaped layers. Its rich green colour and elegant, upright growth add instant depth and a miniature forest feel to terrariums, paludariums, and humid vivariums. It grows slowly, but that's part of its charm—it won't stage a hostile takeover of your scape.
Care requirements
Umbrella Moss thrives in bright, indirect light with consistently high humidity and evenly moist conditions. It prefers good airflow without drying out and should never be allowed to sit in direct sun, which can quickly scorch its delicate foliage. It performs best attached to wood, rock, or moisture-retentive substrates where it can gradually establish and spread.
Troubleshooting
If your Umbrella Moss starts turning brown or crispy, it's usually asking for more humidity or moisture rather than a retirement plan. Yellowing or melting often points to excessive direct sunlight or poor water quality. Using rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water will help keep it looking lush, while regular misting and stable humidity encourage healthy growth.
Pet and reptile safety
Hypopterygium rotulatum is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a safer choice for pet-friendly homes. It is also well suited to humid reptile and amphibian enclosures, where it provides a natural, decorative look and helps retain moisture. While considered safe, it is intended as habitat décor rather than a food source, so pets and reptiles should not be encouraged to eat it.
