Appearance and growth habit
The Begonia Rex 'Inca Flame' lives up to its name with bold, fiery foliage in striking shades of crimson, burgundy, silver, and deep green. Its textured, spiralled leaves create eye-catching contrast, making it a standout addition to any indoor plant collection. Compact and bushy, this Rex Begonia is ideal for shelves, plant cabinets, and decorative pots where its colourful foliage can take centre stage.
Care requirements
'Inca Flame' thrives in bright, indirect light, which helps maintain its vivid leaf colours without scorching the foliage. Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. It prefers higher humidity and temperatures between 18–26°C. Feed once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage lush, healthy growth.
Troubleshooting
Brown or crispy leaf edges usually indicate low humidity or inconsistent watering. Yellowing leaves are most often caused by overwatering, so ensure the pot has excellent drainage and avoid soggy soil. If the foliage starts losing its vibrant colours, move it to a brighter spot with indirect light. Rex Begonias like stable conditions, so they'll thank you for keeping sudden changes to a minimum.
Pet and reptile safety
Begonia Rex 'Inca Flame' is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested due to naturally occurring insoluble calcium oxalates, which can cause mouth irritation and digestive upset. It is not considered safe for reptiles, including crested geckos, gargoyle geckos, bearded dragons, leopard geckos, tortoises, and other species that may nibble on the leaves. For everyone's safety, it's best enjoyed as a decorative plant kept out of reach of curious pets and reptiles.
