The Philodendron ‘Emerald Duke’ is a striking tropical foliage plant known for its large, elongated leaves in deep emerald green with a smooth, glossy surface and strong architectural presence. The foliage emerges tightly unfurling in a rich, slightly lighter green before maturing into deep, saturated tones that feel almost velvety in appearance.

This plant has an upright, structured growth habit that gives it a sculptural, almost “statue-like” quality as it matures. Unlike trailing philodendrons, Emerald Duke grows more vertically and compactly, making it a powerful focal point in interior plant styling.

  • Leaves: Large, elongated, deep emerald green, glossy finish

  • Growth Habit: Upright, self-heading tropical aroid

  • Texture & Feel: Smooth, firm, waxy foliage with strong structure

  • Size: Typically 60–120 cm indoors, larger in ideal conditions

It feels like stillness in plant form—strong, grounded, and deeply green.

Indoor or Outdoor?

  • 🌿 Indoor: Excellent statement indoor foliage plant

  • 🌤️ Outdoor: Suitable for warm, frost-free tropical/subtropical climates in shaded positions

🚫 Not frost-tolerant and sensitive to cold drafts or direct harsh sun.

Full Care Guide

🌞 Light Requirements

  • Prefers bright, indirect light

  • Can tolerate moderate light but thrives with consistent brightness

  • ❌ Avoid direct sun, which can scorch or fade foliage

💡 Insufficient light leads to slower growth and smaller leaves.

💧 Watering

  • Keep soil lightly moist but never waterlogged

  • Allow the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry between waterings

🕰️ Typically every 5–10 days, depending on environment

⚖️ Sensitive to overwatering—good drainage is essential.

🌱 Soil Requirements

  • Requires a rich, airy, well-draining aroid mix

  • Ideal blend:

    • Coco coir or peat-based soil

    • Orchid bark

    • Perlite

    • Charcoal (optional for airflow and freshness)

🌱 Designed to mimic tropical forest floor conditions with oxygen-rich roots.

Best Growth Habitat

  • 🌡️ Temperature: 18–28°C

  • 💧 Humidity: Moderate to high humidity (50–80% ideal)

  • 🌬️ Airflow: Gentle airflow prevents rot and fungal issues

🌿 Thrives in:

  • Bright indoor living spaces with filtered light

  • Plant shelves or floor-standing feature pots

  • Humid indoor plant clusters

  • Conservatories or shaded greenhouse environments

Maintenance & Care

✂️ Pruning & Structure

  • Remove old or damaged leaves at the base

  • Rotate plant regularly for even growth

  • Support may be added for stability in larger specimens

🌿 Feeding

  • Feed every 4–6 weeks during active growth

  • Use a balanced liquid fertiliser

  • Reduce feeding during cooler months

🪴 Growth Tip

  • Consistent humidity encourages larger, more dramatic leaves

Pet & Reptile Safety

  • ⚠️ Philodendron ‘Emerald Duke’ is toxic if ingested by cats, dogs, and reptiles

  • Contains calcium oxalates which can cause irritation

Keep safely out of reach of pets and reptiles.

Common Problems & Gentle Fixes

  • Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage

  • Drooping leaves: Underwatering or root stress

  • Slow growth: Low light or cool temperatures

  • Brown tips: Low humidity or inconsistent watering
