Appearance and growth habit

Hemianthus Callitrichoides 'HC Cuba', often simply called HC Cuba, is one of the smallest and most sought-after carpeting plants for terrariums, paludariums, and aquascapes. Its tiny, vibrant green leaves form a dense, low-growing mat that creates a lush, miniature forest floor effect. Given the right conditions, it spreads quickly by sending out runners, turning bare spaces into a beautiful green carpet.

Care requirements

HC Cuba thrives in bright, indirect light and enjoys consistently moist conditions with high humidity. It grows best in nutrient-rich substrates and appreciates regular watering without becoming waterlogged. While it has a reputation for being a little fussy, keeping its roots happy and its humidity high is usually enough to stop the drama. Ideal for closed terrariums and humid enclosures.

Troubleshooting

If your HC Cuba starts stretching, becoming sparse, or losing its compact appearance, it usually needs more light. Yellowing or melting leaves are often caused by sudden environmental changes, low humidity, or allowing it to dry out. Trim regularly to encourage dense growth and prevent it from becoming leggy.

Pet and reptile safety

Hemianthus Callitrichoides 'HC Cuba' is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. It is also regarded as safe for use in bioactive reptile, amphibian, and invertebrate enclosures, making it an excellent choice for creating naturalistic habitats. As with any plant, it should enhance your enclosure rather than serve as a primary food source.
