Appearance and growth habit

Hemionitis arifolia (Heart Leaf Fern) is a charming tropical fern with glossy, heart-shaped leaves that bring a soft, elegant look to any indoor space or terrarium. Its compact, clumping growth habit makes it perfect for smaller pots, shaded displays, and humid environments where its lush foliage can really shine.

Care requirements

Heart Leaf Fern thrives in bright, indirect light and consistently moist, well-draining soil. It loves high humidity, making it an excellent choice for terrariums, greenhouses, or naturally humid rooms. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely, but don't leave it sitting in water either. A little consistency goes a long way with this fern.

Troubleshooting

Brown, crispy leaf edges usually mean the humidity is too low or the soil has dried out. Yellowing fronds are often caused by overwatering or poor drainage. If the leaves start looking a little sad, it's usually asking for more humidity rather than more water. This fern enjoys a stable environment and isn't a fan of dramatic lifestyle changes.

Pet and reptile safety

Hemionitis arifolia is considered pet and reptile safe. It is non-toxic to cats, dogs, and is generally regarded as safe for reptiles, making it a great choice for pet-friendly homes and many bioactive reptile enclosures. While safe if nibbled occasionally, it's still best to discourage pets from treating it as a salad bar.
