Appearance and growth habit
Marcgravia Umbellata is a highly sought-after tropical climbing plant with glossy, rounded leaves and a naturally shingling growth habit. It starts by clinging closely to surfaces before producing longer growth as it matures, making it an excellent choice for bioactive terrariums and tropical displays. Supplied as a tray, it is perfect for establishing multiple plants or creating a fuller planted background.
Care requirements
Give Marcgravia Umbellata bright, indirect light, warm temperatures around 20–28°C and consistently high humidity. Keep the growing medium lightly and evenly moist, but never waterlogged. It appreciates an airy, well-draining substrate and something to climb or attach to, such as cork, wood or a background. Good humidity and strong indirect light will encourage faster, fuller growth.
Troubleshooting
Brown or crispy leaves usually mean humidity is too low or the plant has dried out too much. Yellowing leaves can indicate excessive moisture or poor drainage, while slow growth is often caused by insufficient light or temperatures that are too cool. Keep conditions warm, humid and stable, and give it something to climb — Marcgravia is much happier when it has somewhere to go.
Pet and reptile safety
Marcgravia Umbellata is generally considered safe for reptiles, making it a popular choice for tropical and bioactive terrariums. It is also considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, although any plant material can cause mild stomach upset if eaten in large quantities. As always, avoid using plants treated with pesticides or chemicals inside reptile enclosures.
