Appearance and growth habit

Alocasia Frydek Variegated is a stunning collector's plant, featuring large, velvety deep green leaves decorated with beautiful patches and splashes of creamy white to pale mint variegation. Its contrasting white veins add even more detail to the striking arrow-shaped foliage. Each leaf develops its own unique pattern, making every plant one of a kind. It grows upright from underground rhizomes and makes a spectacular indoor statement plant.

Care requirements

Provide bright, indirect light to maintain healthy growth and encourage beautiful variegation. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, as the lighter sections can scorch easily. Keep the growing medium lightly moist but never soggy, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix and provide warmth, higher humidity and good airflow. Consistent conditions are key to keeping this beauty happy.

Troubleshooting

Brown or crispy patches on the white sections may indicate sunburn, low humidity or inconsistent watering. Yellowing leaves can be caused by overwatering, poor drainage or natural leaf ageing. Keep an eye out for spider mites and thrips, which love Alocasia foliage. Variegated growth can be slower because the lighter sections contain less chlorophyll, so don't expect it to rush – this one likes to take its time!

Pet and reptile safety

Alocasia Frydek Variegated is toxic if chewed or ingested by cats, dogs and other pets due to insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. These can cause mouth irritation, drooling, swelling and difficulty swallowing. It is not recommended for reptile enclosures or habitats where animals may nibble on the foliage. Keep this beautiful collector's plant away from curious pets and reptiles.
