Asplenium antiquum (Japanese Bird’s Nest Fern) Kokedama
The Asplenium antiquum, often called the Japanese Bird’s Nest Fern, is sculptural and full without looking busy. Glossy, strap-like fronds rise upright from the centre before gently arching outward, forming a neat rosette shape. The leaves are thicker and slightly more structured than the common Bird’s Nest Fern, with subtle rippling along the edges and a strong central midrib.
It has presence. Not wild jungle energy. More refined tropical.
As a kokedama, the rounded moss ball complements the plant’s natural nest shape, creating a balanced, organic silhouette that feels calm and intentional.
Pet & Reptile Safety
Good news: Asplenium antiquum is considered non toxic to dogs, cats, and reptiles.
It’s a safer choice for homes with curious pets or reptile setups. Chewing isn’t encouraged, but it is not classified as poisonous.
Plant Care:
Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. It tolerates medium light but avoid direct sun, which can scorch the fronds.
Water: Keep the moss ball consistently lightly moist. This fern does not enjoy drying out completely. Avoid pouring water directly into the centre of the plant. Always water by soaking the moss ball.
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. In very dry air, leaf tips may brown.
Temperature: Thrives in warm, stable indoor temperatures. Protect from cold drafts and heaters.
Growth Habit: Forms a tidy rosette with new fronds emerging from the centre and unfurling gradually.
Kokedama Care
Watering: When the moss ball feels lighter but not bone dry, submerge in room temperature water for 10–15 minutes. Allow it to drain thoroughly before placing back.
Frequency may be slightly higher than drought tolerant plants, as ferns prefer consistent moisture.
Drainage: Never allow the kokedama to sit in standing water.
Moss Maintenance: Light misting helps maintain humidity and keeps the moss fresh.
Feeding: Use a diluted liquid fertiliser once a month during spring and summer.
Rotation: Rotate occasionally for even growth, especially if placed near a window.
