Appearance and growth habit

Asplenium viviparum, also known as the Mother Fern, is an attractive tropical fern with bright green, finely divided fronds that create a lush, feathery appearance. It produces tiny plantlets along its mature fronds, giving you the opportunity to grow new ferns without much effort. Perfect for adding a touch of greenery to terrariums or indoor plant collections.

Care requirements

This fern prefers bright, indirect light, warm temperatures and consistently moist soil. It thrives in high humidity, making it a great choice for suitable tropical terrariums. Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive potting mix and avoid letting the soil dry out completely. Keep it away from harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch those delicate fronds.

Troubleshooting

Brown or crispy frond tips usually indicate low humidity, underwatering or exposure to direct sunlight. Yellowing fronds may suggest overwatering or poor drainage. Keep the soil evenly moist without leaving the roots sitting in water, and provide good airflow to help keep your fern looking fresh and fabulous.

Pet and reptile safety

Asplenium viviparum is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. It is also commonly used as an ornamental plant in tropical reptile enclosures, but species-specific safety information is limited. If using it in a reptile habitat, confirm suitability for your particular reptile and ensure the plant is free from pesticides, fertilisers and other harmful chemical residues before introducing it.
