Appearance and growth habit

Cissus rhombifolia ‘Ellen Danica’, commonly known as Oak Leaf Ivy, is a beautiful trailing plant with glossy, deeply divided green leaves that resemble tiny oak leaves. Its lush foliage creates a full, leafy look, making it ideal for hanging baskets, shelves or adding greenery to a terrarium-style display. Give it room to trail, and it will happily fill the space without demanding the spotlight.

Care requirements

This easy-going climber prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate medium light conditions. Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry, and use a well-draining potting mix to keep its roots happy. It enjoys moderate humidity and temperatures between 18–27°C. You can grow it as a trailing plant or provide a support for climbing. Trim the stems occasionally to encourage fuller growth and keep things looking tidy.

Troubleshooting

Yellow leaves can indicate overwatering, while crispy edges or wilting may point to underwatering or excessive heat. Leggy growth usually means the plant needs brighter indirect light. Keep an eye out for spider mites and mealybugs, especially in dry conditions. A little pruning and a suitable spot can make all the difference.

Pet and reptile safety

Cissus rhombifolia is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a pet-friendly foliage option. However, eating plant material may still cause mild digestive upset. Its safety for reptiles is not sufficiently established, so do not automatically assume it is suitable for terrariums or reptile enclosures. Always confirm its suitability for your specific reptile species before adding it to a habitat.
