Appearance and growth habit
Colocasia Esculenta 'Illustris' is a striking tropical foliage plant, loved for its large, heart-shaped leaves featuring deep green to almost black colouring, dramatic metallic purple tones and contrasting bright green veins. The underside of the leaves often displays beautiful purple hues, adding even more interest. Growing from underground corms, it produces impressive upright foliage and makes a fantastic statement plant for tropical gardens, patios or large indoor spaces.
Care requirements
Provide bright, indirect light to partial sun. It can tolerate more sunlight when gradually acclimatised, provided it receives enough moisture. Colocasia loves consistently moist soil and should not be allowed to dry out completely during active growth. Use a rich, well-draining growing medium and provide warmth and higher humidity. Regular feeding during the growing season will encourage larger, healthier leaves.
Troubleshooting
Yellowing leaves can indicate inconsistent watering, nutrient deficiencies or natural ageing. Brown, crispy leaf edges may result from underwatering, low humidity or excessive sunlight. Watch for spider mites, thrips and other common foliage pests. Growth may slow considerably during cooler months, and the plant may enter dormancy. Reduce watering during this period and allow it to rest.
Pet and reptile safety
Colocasia Esculenta 'Illustris' contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic if chewed or ingested by cats, dogs and other pets. It can cause mouth irritation, drooling, swelling and difficulty swallowing. It is not recommended for reptile enclosures or habitats where animals may nibble on the foliage. Keep away from curious pets and reptiles.
