Appearance and growth habit

Drosera burmannii is a compact, fast-growing carnivorous sundew with a flat rosette of green leaves covered in sparkling, sticky tentacles. These droplets trap tiny insects, making this little plant a surprisingly efficient hunter. Its compact size makes it a great choice for carnivorous plant collections and suitable terrarium displays.

Care requirements

Provide bright light to encourage healthy growth and attractive colouring. Use a nutrient-poor carnivorous plant substrate and keep it consistently moist with rainwater, distilled water or reverse osmosis water. Avoid ordinary potting soil, fertilisers and mineral-rich tap water. Good light and consistently moist conditions will help keep this tiny insect catcher thriving.

Troubleshooting

If the sticky droplets disappear, check the lighting, humidity and water quality. Browning leaves or poor growth may indicate unsuitable growing conditions. Keep the substrate moist without allowing it to dry out completely, and avoid feeding it fertiliser. Remember, this plant catches its own snacks — no need to turn into a full-time insect waiter!

Pet and reptile safety

Drosera burmannii is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, but ingestion should still be discouraged. It is not widely recognised as toxic to reptiles, although species-specific safety information is limited. Its sticky leaves can trap small insects, so consider your reptile’s size and behaviour before adding it to an enclosure.
