Appearance and growth habit
Drosera prolifera, also known as the Proliferous Sundew, is a fascinating carnivorous plant from the tropical rainforests of Queensland, Australia. It produces rounded green leaves covered in sticky, glistening tentacles that trap tiny insects. True to its name, it also produces little plantlets along its flower stalks, allowing it to gradually form a lovely spreading colony.
 
Care requirements
This sundew is particularly well suited to humid terrariums and enjoys bright but filtered or indirect light rather than harsh direct sun. Keep the growing medium consistently moist using distilled, rain or reverse-osmosis water, and use a nutrient-poor carnivorous plant mix or sphagnum-based medium. High humidity and temperatures around 18–28°C will keep it happiest. No winter dormancy is required, so thankfully there is no seasonal drama to deal with.
 
Troubleshooting
If your Drosera prolifera stops producing its characteristic sticky “dew”, check the humidity, moisture levels and lighting first. Browning or collapsing growth can indicate stress from unsuitable water, overly harsh light or poor growing conditions. Avoid normal fertilisers and nutrient-rich potting soil, as this little carnivore is designed to get its nutrients from insects rather than being fed like a regular houseplant.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Drosera prolifera is generally regarded as a non-toxic carnivorous plant and is suitable for use around reptile and amphibian enclosures. However, it is best treated as a decorative habitat plant rather than a food source, and pets or reptiles should not be encouraged to chew on any plant. For planted terrariums, ensure the enclosure and any other plants or materials used are also appropriate for the specific animal species.
