Appearance and growth habit
Ficus Yellow Gem is an attractive indoor foliage plant, loved for its glossy, oval-shaped leaves with beautiful golden yellow to lime-green colouring. New growth often emerges in brighter shades before deepening as the leaves mature. With its upright growth habit and dense foliage, it makes a lovely statement plant and adds a cheerful pop of colour to any indoor space.
Care requirements
Provide bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant yellow colouring. It can tolerate some gentle morning sunlight but avoid harsh afternoon sun. Water when the top few centimetres of the growing medium have dried out, and use a well-draining potting mix. Ficus Yellow Gem enjoys warmth, good airflow and consistent conditions. Avoid moving it around too often, as Ficus plants can be a little dramatic when their surroundings change!
Troubleshooting
Yellowing leaves and leaf drop can indicate overwatering, underwatering or sudden environmental changes. Brown leaf edges may result from inconsistent watering, low humidity or excessive direct sunlight. Check regularly for scale insects, mealybugs and spider mites. Good drainage and a consistent watering routine will help keep this plant looking its best.
Pet and reptile safety
Ficus Yellow Gem is not considered pet-safe. Its milky latex sap can cause skin irritation and gastrointestinal upset if chewed or ingested by cats and dogs. It is not recommended for reptile enclosures or habitats where animals may come into contact with or nibble on the foliage. Keep away from curious pets and reptiles.
