Appearance and growth habit
Hoya Carnosa Variegated is a classic, easy-going Hoya with thick, waxy leaves featuring attractive green, cream and sometimes pinkish variegation. It grows as a trailing or climbing vine and can eventually produce clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers when mature. Give it something to climb and it will happily get on with the job.
Care requirements
Give Hoya Carnosa Variegated bright, indirect light, with some gentle morning or late-afternoon sun helping to maintain strong variegation and encourage flowering. Allow the potting mix to dry out well between waterings and use a chunky, free-draining mix. Keep it warm with moderate to high humidity, but avoid constantly wet roots. It prefers being slightly snug in its pot rather than swimming in soil.
Troubleshooting
Yellow, soft or dropping leaves usually indicate overwatering, while wrinkled leaves can mean the plant is too dry. Long gaps between leaves or reduced variegation can indicate insufficient light. Avoid repeatedly moving the plant once it starts producing flower buds, as Hoyas can be surprisingly dramatic about having their plans interrupted.
Pet and reptile safety
Hoya Carnosa is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a good choice for pet-friendly homes. It is also generally regarded as reptile-safe and can be suitable for appropriate terrariums and reptile enclosures. Always use plants that are free from pesticides and other chemical treatments before introducing them to an animal enclosure.
