Appearance and growth habit
Microsorum diversifolium, commonly known as Kangaroo Fern, is an attractive fern with glossy green leaves that vary in shape, giving it a wonderfully wild, textured appearance. Its spreading growth habit makes it ideal for hanging baskets, shelves, shaded corners and tropical terrariums. A great choice for adding lush greenery without needing a plant jungle to make it feel at home.
Care requirements
Kangaroo Fern prefers bright, indirect light or partial shade and thrives in consistently moist but well-draining soil. It enjoys moderate to high humidity, making it suitable for humid terrariums and tropical plant displays. Water when the surface of the soil begins to dry, but avoid waterlogged roots. Keep it away from harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch its leaves.
Troubleshooting
Brown or crispy leaf edges can indicate low humidity, underwatering or too much direct sunlight. Yellowing leaves may be caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Ensure the soil stays lightly moist without becoming soggy, and provide good airflow to help prevent fungal issues. Remove damaged fronds to keep your fern looking fresh.
Pet and reptile safety
Kangaroo Fern is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a pet-friendly choice for the home. It is also commonly used in tropical terrarium setups, but suitability depends on the reptile species and enclosure conditions. Source plants grown without harmful pesticides, fertilisers or systemic treatments before introducing them into an enclosure, and confirm suitability for your specific animal.
