Appearance and growth habit

Maranta leuconeura ‘Kerchoveana’, commonly known as the Rabbit’s Foot Prayer Plant, is a charming foliage plant with soft green leaves decorated with distinctive dark green markings on either side of the central vein. As the leaves mature, the markings can develop a beautiful feathered appearance. This low-growing plant spreads gradually, making it ideal for pots, plant shelves and tropical terrariums. And yes, its leaves fold upwards at night, because apparently even plants have a bedtime routine!

Care requirements

This tropical beauty prefers medium to bright indirect light, warm temperatures of 18–27°C and moderate to high humidity. Keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged, using a well-draining, moisture-retentive potting mix. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, as this can cause the leaves to curl and develop crispy edges. It thrives in humid environments, making it a lovely choice for suitable tropical terrarium setups.

Troubleshooting

Curling leaves usually indicate that the soil is too dry, humidity is too low or the plant is exposed to excessive heat. Brown, crispy edges may result from dry air or mineral buildup from tap water, while yellow leaves often point to overwatering or poor drainage. Keep its moisture levels consistent, avoid harsh direct sunlight and check regularly for spider mites, especially in dry conditions.

Pet and reptile safety

Maranta leuconeura ‘Kerchoveana’ is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a pet-friendly choice for homes with curious paws. It is also commonly used as an ornamental plant in tropical terrariums, but reptile safety depends on the species and growing conditions. Ensure the plant has not been treated with pesticides or systemic chemicals that could harm your animals, and verify its suitability for your specific reptile before adding it to an enclosure.
