Appearance and growth habit
Monstera Aurea is a highly sought-after variegated Monstera, loved for its striking green leaves splashed with golden yellow and creamy lime variegation. Each leaf develops its own unique pattern, making every plant a little different. As a climbing aroid, it produces larger leaves as it matures and will appreciate a moss pole or sturdy support to show off its beautiful foliage.
Care requirements
Provide bright, indirect light to maintain healthy growth and encourage strong variegation. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the lighter leaf sections. Allow the top layer of the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings and use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix. It enjoys warmth, moderate to high humidity and good airflow. A little extra light and the right support will go a long way!
Troubleshooting
Brown or crispy patches on the yellow sections can indicate sunburn, low humidity or inconsistent watering. Yellowing leaves may suggest overwatering or poor drainage, so check the roots and allow the growing medium to dry appropriately. Remember, variegated sections contain less chlorophyll, so growth can be slower than on an ordinary green Monstera. Patience is part of the package!
Pet and reptile safety
Monstera Aurea is toxic if chewed or ingested by cats, dogs and other pets due to its insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause mouth irritation, drooling and difficulty swallowing. It is not recommended for reptile enclosures or habitats where animals may nibble on the leaves. Keep this golden beauty out of reach of curious pets and reptiles.
