Appearance and growth habit

Oxalis vulcanicola ‘Plum Crazy’ is a colourful little plant with clover-like leaves in rich plum, purple and green tones, often featuring contrasting variegation. Its compact, spreading growth habit makes it ideal for pots, windowsills and adding a splash of colour to your plant collection. The leaves may fold up at night or in low light, then reopen when conditions improve. A little drama? Yes. But at least this one is entertaining.

Care requirements

Place your Oxalis in bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant colours, with some gentle morning sun if conditions allow. Water when the top layer of soil begins to dry, and use a well-draining potting mix to prevent soggy roots. It prefers moderate temperatures and good airflow. Growth may slow down during periods of stress or dormancy, so reduce watering if the plant naturally dies back.

Troubleshooting

Leggy growth or faded colouring can indicate insufficient light, while yellowing leaves and soft stems may point to overwatering. Crispy foliage can result from underwatering or excessive heat. If the plant begins to die back, don't panic immediately; Oxalis can go dormant under unfavourable conditions. Check the roots and growing conditions before deciding whether it needs a little rest or a change in care.

Pet and reptile safety

Oxalis contains soluble oxalates, which can be harmful to cats and dogs if eaten in sufficient quantities, potentially causing digestive upset and, in larger exposures, more serious effects. Keep it away from pets and discourage chewing. It is not recommended for reptile enclosures, as its safety for reptiles is not established and its oxalate content is a concern. Choose a confirmed reptile-safe plant for bioactive habitats instead.
