Appearance and growth habit

Pachira aquatica ‘Braided’, commonly known as the Money Tree, is a popular indoor plant featuring glossy green, hand-shaped leaves and a distinctive braided trunk. Its upright growth habit makes it an attractive statement plant for homes and offices without taking up too much floor space. It is also associated with good luck and prosperity, so who couldn't use a little extra of that?

Care requirements

Your Money Tree prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate medium light conditions. Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry, allowing excess water to drain freely. Use a well-draining potting mix and keep it in a warm environment with temperatures around 18–27°C. Avoid harsh direct sunlight and soggy soil. Give it a little consistency, and it will reward you with lush, glossy foliage.

Troubleshooting

Yellow leaves can indicate overwatering, poor drainage or inconsistent watering, while brown, crispy edges may suggest underwatering, low humidity or too much direct sunlight. Leaf drop can occur when the plant experiences sudden changes in light, temperature or watering. Check the soil before reaching for the watering can; more water is not always the answer!

Pet and reptile safety

Pachira aquatica is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a more pet-friendly choice for indoor spaces. However, chewing any plant may cause mild stomach upset. Its safety for reptiles is not well established, so it should not automatically be considered safe for terrariums or reptile enclosures. If you plan to use it in a habitat, verify its suitability for your specific reptile species first.
