Appearance and growth habit

Philodendron billietiae is a striking tropical Philodendron known for its long, arrow-shaped leaves, bold orange petioles and impressive mature foliage. It has an upright to climbing growth habit and can become a substantial statement plant when given enough space. A support such as a moss pole can encourage larger, more mature leaves.

Care requirements

Give Philodendron billietiae bright, indirect light and keep it warm, ideally around 18–28°C. Water when the top few centimetres of the growing medium have dried and use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix. It enjoys moderate to high humidity and benefits from good airflow. Feed regularly during active growth to encourage healthy new leaves and strong development.

Troubleshooting

Yellowing leaves can indicate overwatering, poor drainage or roots staying too wet. Brown or crispy edges may be caused by low humidity, underwatering or too much direct sunlight. Small leaves or slow growth can mean the plant needs more light, warmth, nutrients or climbing support. Keep conditions consistent and give those dramatic leaves plenty of room to do their thing.

Pet and reptile safety

Philodendron billietiae is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or eaten because it contains insoluble calcium oxalates, which can cause mouth irritation, drooling and difficulty swallowing. It is not recommended for reptiles that may nibble on the foliage. For reptile enclosures, choose a confirmed reptile-safe plant instead.
