Appearance and growth habit
Philodendron Dark Lord is a dramatic, upright-growing Philodendron prized for its large, elongated leaves that emerge burgundy to deep red before maturing into dark green, almost black foliage. The striking colour changes make every new leaf a little event. It grows upright and can become a substantial statement plant with good care and enough space.
Care requirements
Give Philodendron Dark Lord bright, indirect light to encourage strong growth and rich foliage colour. Water when the top few centimetres of the growing medium have dried and use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix. Keep it warm, ideally around 18–28°C, with moderate to high humidity. Feed during active growth to encourage larger, healthier leaves.
Troubleshooting
Yellowing leaves are commonly caused by overwatering, poor drainage or soil that stays wet for too long. Brown edges can indicate low humidity, underwatering or excessive direct sunlight. Slow growth or smaller leaves may mean the plant needs more light, warmth or nutrients. Keep conditions consistent and avoid constantly moving it around — this Dark Lord prefers to rule from one spot.
Pet and reptile safety
Philodendron Dark Lord is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or eaten because it contains insoluble calcium oxalates, which can cause mouth irritation, drooling and difficulty swallowing. It is not recommended for reptiles that may nibble on the foliage. For reptile enclosures, choose a confirmed reptile-safe plant instead.
