Appearance and growth habit
Philodendron Spiritus Sancti is one of the most sought-after rare aroids, famous for its long, narrow, strap-like green leaves and elegant growth habit. This collector’s plant is a true statement piece, producing elongated foliage that can become increasingly impressive as it matures. Rare, distinctive and definitely not your average houseplant!
Care requirements
Provide bright, indirect light to encourage healthy growth, avoiding harsh direct sunlight that can scorch the leaves. Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix with good airflow around the roots. Keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged, and provide warm temperatures with moderate to high humidity. This rare plant appreciates consistency, so avoid letting it swing between drought and swamp conditions.
Troubleshooting
Yellowing leaves may indicate overwatering, poor drainage or natural ageing, while brown, crispy edges can result from low humidity, underwatering or excessive light. Slow growth is common with rare aroids, so don't panic if it isn't producing a new leaf every five minutes. Check the roots, review your watering routine and inspect regularly for pests.
Pet and reptile safety
Philodendron Spiritus Sancti is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or ingested because it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause mouth irritation, drooling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of reach of pets. It is not recommended for reptile enclosures, as its safety for reptiles is not well established and ingestion may cause irritation. Choose a confirmed reptile-safe plant for habitats where animals may nibble the foliage.
