Appearance and growth habit
Saxifraga stolonifera, commonly known as Strawberry Begonia or Mother of Thousands, is a charming trailing plant with rounded, textured leaves and runners that produce little baby plants. The Tricolour/Green Mix may include plants with green foliage or attractive cream, pink and green variegation. It stays relatively compact while spreading, making it a great choice for terrariums, hanging pots and humid plant displays.
 
Care requirements
Give Saxifraga stolonifera bright, indirect light and keep the soil lightly and consistently moist, but never soggy. It enjoys moderate to high humidity and does particularly well in a terrarium or other humid environment. Use a well-draining, organic-rich potting mix and avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. Let the top of the soil dry slightly between waterings rather than turning the pot into a swamp.
 
Troubleshooting
Brown, crispy leaves usually mean the plant is too dry, the humidity is too low, or it is receiving too much direct sunlight. Yellowing or mushy growth can indicate overwatering or poor drainage. If the plant becomes leggy, move it somewhere with brighter filtered light. Those little runners can also be rooted to produce new plants, so this one is quite happy to make more work for you.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Saxifraga stolonifera is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs and is commonly used as a decorative plant in suitable reptile and amphibian enclosures. As with any plant, it should be treated as decorative rather than as a food source, and animals should not be encouraged to eat large amounts of it.
