Appearance and growth habit
Spotted Begonia Polka Dot (Begonia maculata) is a true showstopper with olive-green, angel-wing-shaped leaves covered in striking silver-white spots and dramatic burgundy-red undersides. Its upright, cane-like stems create an elegant, airy structure that becomes more impressive as the plant matures. It may also produce clusters of delicate white or pale pink flowers, but the spotted foliage is undoubtedly the star of the show. If plants could wear designer outfits, this one would be dressed for the occasion.
Care requirements
This begonia thrives in bright, indirect light, which helps maintain strong growth and vibrant leaf colour. Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry, keeping the soil lightly moist but never soggy. It enjoys moderate to high humidity and warm indoor temperatures away from cold drafts. A well-draining potting mix is essential to prevent root problems and keep the plant looking its best.
Troubleshooting
Brown, crispy leaf edges are often caused by low humidity, inconsistent watering, or excessive direct sunlight. Yellowing leaves usually point to overwatering or poor drainage. If the plant becomes leggy or sparse, it likely needs brighter light or occasional pruning to encourage bushier growth. While it can be a little expressive about its needs, it generally rewards good care with impressive growth and stunning foliage.
Pet and reptile safety
Spotted Begonia Polka Dot is toxic to cats, dogs, and reptiles if ingested. It contains insoluble calcium oxalates that can cause mouth irritation, drooling, vomiting, and digestive discomfort. It is not considered safe for tortoises, bearded dragons, geckos, or other pets that may chew foliage. Best kept out of reach so it remains a beautiful conversation piece rather than a veterinary concern.
