Appearance and growth habit
Asplenium antiquum, commonly known as the Japanese Bird’s Nest Fern, forms a beautiful upright rosette of glossy, strap-like green fronds. This plant comes as a kokedama wrapped in live moss, giving it a natural, woodland-style appearance that works beautifully as a hanging or tabletop display. The fronds emerge from the centre, creating a lush focal point without taking over the entire room.
 
Care requirements
Give Asplenium antiquum bright, indirect light and keep the moss ball consistently moist but not waterlogged. It enjoys warm temperatures and higher humidity, making it particularly well suited to bathrooms, humid rooms and suitable terrariums. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the fronds, and never allow the kokedama to remain completely dry for extended periods.
 
Troubleshooting
Brown or crispy frond tips usually indicate low humidity, underwatering or exposure to too much direct sunlight. Yellowing fronds can be caused by overwatering or poor airflow. Because this is a kokedama, check the moss ball regularly rather than relying only on the surface to judge moisture. If the moss ball feels noticeably lighter and dry, it is time for a good soak.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Asplenium antiquum is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs and is regarded as a pet-friendly fern. It is also commonly suitable for reptile and amphibian enclosures as a decorative plant, provided it has been grown without pesticides or other chemicals. It should still be treated as a decorative habitat plant rather than a food source.
