Appearance and growth habit

Ficus repens ‘Variegated’, is a compact, fast-growing climbing plant with small heart-shaped leaves featuring attractive green and creamy-white variegation. It naturally clings and spreads across surfaces, making it an excellent choice for tropical terrariums, vivariums and bioactive enclosures where you want quick coverage and a lush, established look.

Care requirements

Provide bright, indirect light to maintain the best variegation, along with warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Keep the growing medium lightly moist but well drained, particularly while the plant is establishing. It appreciates regular moisture and humidity and will readily climb suitable backgrounds, branches and other surfaces when given the opportunity.

Troubleshooting

Loss of variegation or long, sparse growth usually indicates insufficient light. Yellowing leaves can be caused by overwatering, while crispy or curling leaves may indicate that the plant is too dry or humidity is too low. Regular trimming will help keep vigorous growth under control and encourage a fuller appearance. In other words, give it the right conditions and it will happily try to redecorate your entire enclosure.

Pet and reptile safety

Ficus repens is considered toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, as ficus plants contain an irritating milky sap. It is therefore not recommended as a pet-safe plant for animals that may chew on the foliage. It is also not considered a reptile-safe choice for enclosures where reptiles can freely nibble or ingest the plant. If using it in a vivarium, ensure the animal cannot consume it and use untreated plants free from pesticides and other potentially harmful chemicals.
