Appearance and growth habit
Riccia fluitans, commonly known as Crystalwort Moss, is a vibrant bright green aquatic moss with delicate branching fronds that create a soft, cushion-like appearance. Naturally a floating plant, it can also be attached to rocks, wood, or mesh to form lush carpets in aquariums, paludariums, and high-humidity terrariums. Its fresh, velvety look adds instant texture and a natural forest feel to any setup.
 
Care requirements
Crystalwort Moss grows best in bright light with consistently moist or fully submerged conditions, depending on how it's being used. It appreciates clean water, good humidity, and regular trimming to maintain a dense, healthy carpet. If attached to hardscape, it will need occasional retying as it grows. Give it the right conditions and it'll happily spread—without demanding much attention.
 
Troubleshooting
If the moss begins turning brown or transparent, it is usually a sign of poor lighting, drying out, or declining water quality. Loose pieces naturally break away as it grows, so regular trimming helps keep it tidy and encourages fuller growth. Avoid allowing it to dry out for extended periods, as this can quickly damage the delicate fronds.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Riccia fluitans is non-toxic and is considered safe for aquariums, paludariums, and most reptile and amphibian enclosures. It is suitable for species such as crested geckos, gargoyle geckos, dart frogs, mourning geckos, and other humidity-loving reptiles and amphibians. While safe if occasionally nibbled, it should be regarded as decorative habitat enrichment rather than a primary food source.
