Appearance and growth habit
Nephrolepis exaltata, commonly known as the Boston Fern, is a timeless favourite prized for its lush, arching fronds and rich green foliage. Its dense, feathery growth creates a full, cascading appearance that instantly softens indoor spaces. Whether displayed on a shelf, plant stand, or in a hanging basket, it brings classic tropical charm wherever it grows.
Care requirements
Boston Fern thrives in bright, indirect light and prefers consistently moist soil. It enjoys higher humidity and performs especially well in bathrooms, kitchens, or rooms with added moisture in the air. Water regularly to prevent the soil from drying out completely, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate fronds.
Troubleshooting
Brown tips or crispy fronds are usually signs of low humidity, underwatering, or dry indoor air. Yellowing foliage may indicate overwatering, poor drainage, or ageing fronds. If the plant starts looking sparse, increasing humidity and moving it to a brighter spot with filtered light can help restore its lush appearance.
Pet and reptile safety
Nephrolepis exaltata is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and most household pets. It is also generally regarded as safe for reptile enclosures and bioactive habitats. While safe if occasionally nibbled, it should not be treated as a food source, and excessive chewing may still cause mild digestive upset.
