Appearance and growth habit
Epipremnum aureum, commonly known as Golden Pothos, is one of the most popular indoor trailing plants thanks to its heart-shaped green leaves splashed with golden-yellow variegation. Its vines can trail gracefully from shelves and hanging baskets or climb supports and moss poles for larger, more dramatic growth. Fast-growing and incredibly adaptable, it quickly creates a lush, tropical look with minimal effort. If there were an award for easiest plant to make a room look greener, Golden Pothos would be a strong contender.
Care requirements
Golden Pothos thrives in bright, indirect light but adapts well to medium and lower light conditions. Water when the top few centimetres of soil have dried out, ensuring excess water drains away freely. It prefers a well-draining potting mix and is comfortable in average household humidity and temperatures. Brighter light helps maintain stronger variegation and encourages fuller growth.
Troubleshooting
Yellowing leaves are most commonly caused by overwatering, while drooping leaves usually indicate the plant is thirsty. If the variegation fades and leaves become mostly green, the plant may need brighter light. Leggy vines with large gaps between leaves are often a sign of insufficient light. Fortunately, Golden Pothos is forgiving and typically bounces back quickly once conditions improve.
Pet and reptile safety
Epipremnum aureum is toxic to cats, dogs, and reptiles if ingested. It contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause mouth irritation, drooling, vomiting, and digestive discomfort. It is not considered safe for tortoises, bearded dragons, geckos, or other pets that may chew foliage. Best displayed out of reach so it can trail beautifully without becoming a health concern.
