Appearance and growth habit

Asplenium antiquum 'Crissie' is a distinctive Bird’s Nest Fern cultivar with glossy, bright green fronds that split and fork at the tips, giving each leaf a unique, crested appearance. The unusual foliage creates a fuller, more textured look than traditional Bird’s Nest Ferns, making it a standout feature in any indoor plant collection. It grows in a compact rosette shape from a central crown, forming a neat, architectural display that stays attractive year-round. It’s a fern with a little extra personality and isn’t shy about showing it.

Care requirements

This fern thrives in bright, indirect light and enjoys consistently moist, well-draining soil. Water when the surface of the soil begins to dry slightly, taking care not to pour water directly into the central crown, as this can lead to rot. It appreciates moderate to high humidity and warm indoor temperatures. A moisture-retentive but airy potting mix will help keep the roots healthy and the foliage lush.

Troubleshooting

Brown leaf tips are often caused by low humidity, inconsistent watering, or dry indoor air. Yellowing fronds can indicate overwatering or poor drainage. If the fronds lose their vibrant colour or growth slows significantly, the plant may benefit from brighter indirect light. Like most Bird’s Nest Ferns, it prefers stable conditions and rewards consistency with healthy, beautiful growth.

Pet and reptile safety

Asplenium antiquum 'Crissie' is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and most common household pets. It is also generally regarded as safe around reptiles such as geckos, bearded dragons, and tortoises if lightly nibbled. While it is not known to cause poisoning, excessive consumption of plant material may still lead to mild digestive upset, so it is best appreciated as decorative greenery rather than a food source.
