Appearance and growth habit
Sansevieria trifasciata 'Laurentii', commonly known as the Variegated Snake Plant or Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, is a striking architectural plant with upright sword-shaped leaves edged in bright golden-yellow. The bold variegation contrasts beautifully against the deep green foliage, making it a standout feature in modern, minimalist, or tropical interiors. It grows slowly in dense clumps and maintains a tidy, upright shape with very little effort. If plants handed out awards for self-sufficiency, this one would be a strong contender.
Care requirements
This Snake Plant thrives in a wide range of light conditions, from bright indirect light to lower-light indoor spaces. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, as it stores moisture in its thick leaves and strongly prefers dry roots over wet ones. A well-draining potting mix is essential. It tolerates average indoor temperatures and humidity levels with ease, making it an excellent choice for beginners and busy plant owners alike.
Troubleshooting
Soft, mushy leaves are usually a sign of overwatering, while wrinkled leaves may indicate the plant has gone too long without water. If the yellow margins become less vibrant, the plant may benefit from brighter light. Slow growth is completely normal and not usually a cause for concern. This plant is remarkably forgiving, but it does have one firm rule: less water is almost always better than more.
Pet and reptile safety
Sansevieria trifasciata 'Laurentii' is toxic to cats, dogs, and reptiles if ingested. It contains saponins, which can cause nausea, vomiting, drooling, and digestive upset. It is not considered safe for tortoises, bearded dragons, geckos, or other pets that may chew foliage. Best placed out of reach so it can focus on looking stylish rather than causing trouble.
