Saxifraga stolonifera
Strawberry Begonia | Creeping Saxifrage
What it looks like
Saxifraga stolonifera is a soft, trailing beauty with round, slightly fuzzy leaves marked in silver veining and deep green tones. The undersides flush red, especially in good light, and long runners spill over pots like little plant freckles reaching out for adventure. In season, it sends up delicate white flowers with fine, airy petals that feel light and whimsical rather than showy.
It is charming, a bit wild, and happiest when allowed to trail or spill.
Care guide
Light
Bright indirect light is ideal. It will tolerate lower light but growth slows and markings fade. Avoid harsh direct sun as it can scorch the leaves.
Water
Keep the soil lightly moist but never soggy. Water when the top layer feels dry. It prefers consistency rather than extremes.
Humidity
Average indoor humidity is perfectly fine. It appreciates a bit more humidity but does not demand it.
Temperature
Comfortable room temperatures suit it best. Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature drops.
Soil
A well draining, airy mix works best. Think light, not compact.
Growth habit
It produces runners that can be left to trail or pinned down to root and create fuller pots.
Pet safe and reptile safe
Saxifraga stolonifera is considered non toxic and is generally regarded as safe for cats and dogs.
It is also reptile safe, making it suitable for planted enclosures, provided your setup matches its light and moisture needs. As with all enclosure plants, it should not be the primary food source and should be well established before introducing animals.
Quick tip guide
• Let it trail, do not fight the runners
• Bright indirect light keeps the silver markings strong
• Light, regular watering beats heavy soaking
• Great candidate for hanging pots or shelf edges
Troubleshooting
Leaves turning yellow
Usually a sign of overwatering or soil staying too wet. Let the mix dry slightly more between waterings.
Brown or crispy leaf edges
Often caused by direct sun or inconsistent watering. Move to gentler light and keep moisture steady.
Leggy growth with fewer leaves
Not enough light. Shift it closer to a bright window with filtered light.
No runners forming
The plant may be too stressed or too shaded. Improve light and ensure it is not root bound.
This is one of those plants that quietly steals hearts the longer you live with it.
