Asplenium antiquum ‘Osaka’ (Japanese Bird’s Nest Fern) Kokedama
The Asplenium antiquum ‘Osaka’, commonly known as the Japanese Bird’s Nest Fern, is bold, sculptural and beautifully structured.
Thick, glossy green fronds rise upright before gently arching outward, each leaf heavily ruffled and crinkled along the edges. The texture is dramatic but still elegant. It looks almost pleated. Almost architectural.
Compared to the smoother Asplenium nidus, ‘Osaka’ has more movement and more personality in each frond. As a kokedama, the structured rosette sits perfectly on the moss ball, creating a full, rounded silhouette that feels lush yet controlled.
Pet & Reptile Safety
Good news: Asplenium antiquum ‘Osaka’ is considered non toxic to dogs, cats, and reptiles.
It’s a safer choice for pet friendly homes and reptile environments. As always, chewing isn’t encouraged, but it is not classified as poisonous.
Plant Care
Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. It tolerates medium light but avoid direct sun, which can scorch the fronds.
Water: Keep the moss ball consistently lightly moist. This fern does not like drying out completely.
Avoid watering directly into the centre of the rosette. Always water via soaking the moss ball.
Humidity: Loves humidity. Higher humidity keeps the fronds looking fresh and prevents crispy edges.
Temperature: Prefers warm, stable indoor temperatures. Keep away from cold drafts or heaters.
Growth Habit: Forms a compact, upright rosette. New fronds emerge from the centre and unfurl gradually.
Kokedama Care
Watering: When the moss ball feels lighter but not fully dry, submerge in room temperature water for 10–15 minutes. Allow it to drain thoroughly before placing back.
Frequency will depend on your space, but ferns generally require more consistent moisture than drought tolerant plants.
Drainage: Never allow the kokedama to sit in standing water.
Moss Maintenance: Light misting helps maintain humidity and keeps the moss fresh.
Feeding: Use a diluted liquid fertiliser once a month during spring and summer.
Rotation: Rotate occasionally to maintain even growth.
