Appearance and growth habit
Anthurium veitchii, affectionately known as the King Anthurium, is a spectacular collector's plant famous for its long, deeply corrugated leaves that become increasingly dramatic with age. Young plants start out relatively modest, but given time and the right care, the foliage can grow to impressive lengths, creating a true tropical statement.
 
Care requirements
Anthurium veitchii thrives in bright, indirect light and a chunky, well-draining aroid mix that allows plenty of airflow around the roots. Water when the potting mix is almost dry, and avoid leaving the roots sitting in water. It enjoys moderate to high humidity and warm temperatures, rewarding consistent care with larger, more impressive leaves.
 
Troubleshooting
Yellowing leaves are often a sign of overwatering or poor drainage, while crispy leaf edges usually point to low humidity or inconsistent watering. Slow growth can be caused by insufficient light or cool temperatures. Don't be discouraged if it takes its time—this king prefers a slow, steady entrance rather than rushing the show.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Anthurium veitchii is not pet or reptile safe. Like other Anthuriums, it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation of the mouth, tongue, and digestive tract if chewed or eaten by cats, dogs, birds, or reptiles. It should be kept out of reach of curious pets and is not suitable for reptile enclosures where animals may nibble on the foliage.
