Appearance and growth habit
The Ficus lyrata, better known as the Fiddle Leaf Fig, is one of the most iconic indoor houseplants for a reason. Its large, glossy, violin-shaped leaves create an instant statement and bring a bold, tropical feel to any room. It grows upright into a small indoor tree over time, making it perfect for filling empty corners or becoming the star of your plant collection. If plants had an ego, this one would definitely know it's photogenic.
 
Care requirements
Ficus lyrata thrives in bright, indirect light and appreciates a consistent routine. Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry out before watering thoroughly, and avoid letting it sit in soggy soil. It prefers warm temperatures, average to higher humidity, and dislikes being moved around too often. Once it finds a spot it likes, it's happiest staying put. Feed with a balanced fertiliser during spring and summer to encourage healthy growth.
 
Troubleshooting
Dropping a few leaves after bringing your Fiddle Leaf Fig home is completely normal while it settles into its new environment. Yellow leaves usually point to overwatering, while crispy brown edges often indicate underwatering or very dry air. Rotate the plant every few weeks to encourage even growth, and gently wipe the leaves to keep them dust-free so they can soak up as much light as possible.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Ficus lyrata is not pet or reptile safe. Like other Ficus species, it contains a milky sap that can irritate the mouth, skin, and digestive system if chewed or eaten by cats, dogs, birds, or reptiles. It is best kept well out of reach of curious pets and should not be planted inside reptile enclosures where animals may nibble on the leaves.
