Appearance and growth habit

Pellionia repens, commonly known as Watermelon Begonia, is a trailing tropical plant loved for its striking foliage. Its oval leaves feature soft green centres with darker green marbling and a textured, almost painted look that gives it instant visual appeal. It grows in a low, spreading or cascading habit, making it ideal for hanging baskets, shelves, or terrariums where it can gently spill over the edges. Small in size, big on personality.

Care requirements

Watermelon Begonia prefers bright indirect light but can tolerate medium light conditions indoors. Keep the soil consistently lightly moist, but never soggy, and ensure good drainage to prevent root issues. It thrives in higher humidity and warm indoor environments, making it especially happy in bathrooms or grouped plant setups. Regular, gentle care works best — it doesn’t appreciate long dry spells or sudden neglect.

Troubleshooting

Crispy or curled leaves are usually a sign of low humidity or underwatering. Yellowing leaves often indicate overwatering or poor drainage. If the plant becomes leggy or loses its compact shape, it likely needs more light or a light trim to encourage bushier growth. It can be a little sensitive to environmental changes, but generally bounces back once conditions stabilise.

Pet and reptile safety

Pellionia repens Watermelon Begonia is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and most common household pets. It is also generally regarded as safe around reptiles such as geckos, bearded dragons, and tortoises if lightly nibbled. While it won’t cause poisoning, excessive chewing may still lead to mild digestive upset, so it’s best kept as décor rather than a snack option.
