Appearance and growth habit
Philodendron Atabapoense is a striking climbing Philodendron admired for its long, narrow leaves and rich burgundy undersides. The elegant foliage creates a dramatic contrast as the leaves mature, giving the plant a sleek, tropical appearance. With the right support, it develops larger leaves and an impressive vertical growth habit, making it a standout feature in any indoor plant collection.
Care requirements
This Philodendron thrives in bright, indirect light and prefers a chunky, well-draining aroid mix that allows excellent airflow around the roots. Water when the top layer of soil begins to dry, and provide moderate to high humidity for best results. A moss pole or climbing support will encourage stronger growth and larger, more mature foliage.
Troubleshooting
Yellowing leaves are commonly caused by overwatering, while brown edges may indicate low humidity or inconsistent watering. Slow growth or smaller leaves can occur if the plant lacks sufficient light or climbing support. Keeping conditions warm, stable, and humid will help this plant thrive and show off its best colours.
Pet and reptile safety
Philodendron Atabapoense is toxic if chewed or ingested by cats, dogs, and reptiles due to the presence of calcium oxalate crystals. It is not considered pet friendly or reptile safe and should be kept away from curious animals. Although it makes an exceptional collector's plant, it is not suitable for reptile enclosures or bioactive habitats where animals may come into contact with the foliage.
